The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers Celebrates the World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development

(25 February 2020, Hong Kong) UNESCO has proclaimed 4 March of every year the World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development (World Engineering Day) from 2020 onwards. The date is also the anniversary of the founding of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) in 1968. As a supporting member of the proposal of the World Engineering Day and a member of the WFEO, The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) looks forward to the World Engineering Day and endeavours to contribute towards sustainable development of the world.

The World Engineering Day aims to raise the profile of engineering, and celebrates the important contributions of engineers and engineering behind the development of various technologies and applications in areas critical to the sustainable development of the world and the benefit of all mankind. The establishment of the World Engineering Day is supported by over 40 nations and 80 international and national institutions, academies and national commissions to UNESCO, representing 23 million engineers around the world.

The resolution of the establishment is based on the pivotal role engineers and engineering play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015. Engineers are instrumental in maintaining a peaceful world by developing and implementing technologies and systems in areas such as water, energy, environment, and sustainable cities. Engineers also design and develop infrastructure with improved resilience to climate change and natural disasters, which are particularly essential to the developing countries, and support sustainable economic development. Even in ensuring equal access to technology, engineers play a part by developing inclusive innovations.

The HKIE strives to sustain excellence of the engineering profession and raise the standing and visibility of engineers. The Institution will continue promoting engineering as a career option and engaging the future generation in support of the sustainable development of the world.
