The Council of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers Appeals to Cease Violence, Put Aside Differences, and Work Together

(Hong Kong, 16 August 2019) Since June 2019, the proposed Extradition Bill has led to a spate of disputes and conflicts which has intensified in the past few weeks. The Council of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE Council) is gravely disheartened and concerned about the current situation and further dissension in the society. The HKIE Council opposes violence of any kind and urges all parties to work together to ease off the current tensions as quickly as possible for the sake of early restoration of good order.

The HKIE Council is concerned that the current atmosphere in society has affected all aspects of life in Hong Kong. Citizens going to work are worried about the disruption of the railway service; road users are worried about traffic jams due to road blockades; business and leisure travellers are also anxious that their flights may be affected due to disruption of airport operations. Normal operation of society has been interfered. This is no longer the Hong Kong that we know. Tourists step back; shops are closed; and millions of citizens are living in anxiety. Divisiveness in society springs from violence and disruption, resulting in conflict of opinions among friends and family members. All these cause people to feel depressed. We understand that the majority of Hong Kong people wish to express their views peacefully. We have also seen civil servants who religiously carry out their duties with perseverance and commitment. Disruption and violence will only lead to a chaotic society.

The Government should continue to take the initiative to communicate with all sectors of the community, and all sectors should join hands together to work towards reconciliation.

Looking at the ravaged city of Hong Kong, we should learn from the experience and put an end to the chaos as soon as possible, as well as fix social rifts and take our society forward. We, as with over seven million people of Hong Kong, should work together, for ourselves and for our future generations, to end all the violence and social unrest, and to strive for a better Hong Kong.
