Professional engineers play an important role in occupational safety and health. A safe design and operation on engineering works not only prevent the chance of loss due to accidents but also increase the productivity. This in turn strengthens the competitiveness of the organisation. The engineers in the general engineering purpose have the responsibility of taking into the consideration of safety and health issues in their designing of the machinery and systems of work, selection of materials and equipment; controlling of systems and maintenance program, etc. To enable the engineers fulfilling these duties, they need to possess knowledge in safety and health that are generally seldom included in formal curriculum during their engineering education. The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers recognises this situation and jointly organise safety training courses with Occupational Safety and Health Council for all graduate engineers.
