The HKIE Outstanding Paper Award for Young Engineers/Researchers is an international paper award organised by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) to encourage young engineers and researchers aged 35 or below worldwide to develop innovations and technologies, publish their achievements, as well as to promote engineering profession among the young generation.

 

Eligibility

Sole or First Author of a co-authored paper aged 35 or below, from local and overseas, on the closing date of submission. In the event of extension of submission deadline, the age requirement based on the original closing date of submission remains unchanged (i.e. on 6 March 2023).

 

Judging criteria

All submissions will be judged according to the following criteria:

  • Innovation and originality;
  • Impact and significance;
  • Presentation including paper organisation, methodology, critical analysis, quality, style, sources and language use

 

Selection process

  • Each paper will be reviewed by two referees assigned by the judge of respective discipline of the Panel of Judges.
  • Shortlisted papers will be further reviewed by the Panel of Judges.
  • The Panel of Judges will conclude the final result.

Prizes

  • Up to three Awards will be given
  • Each awarded paper will be awarded a plaque, certificate(s) and a cash prize in a total amount of HK$5,000. The Awards will be presented at the Prize Presentation Ceremony to be held in September 2023 (final arrangements to be confirmed)
  • A Public Lecture will be held in Hong Kong for the first authors of the awarded papers to present their papers in Q4 2023 (final arrangements to be confirmed)
    The awarded and shortlisted papers will be published in the HKIE Transactions (Award Issue) in December 2023

 

Submission

  • All submissions should be original works and have not been published or are not under consideration for publication elsewhere
  • All paper submissions should be written in English
  • All entries to the Award would also be treated as submissions to the HKIE Transactions
  • Each entry should be submitted via the HKIE Transactions ScholarOne Manuscripts site at:

    New users should first create an account and make submission via the Author Centre

  • All submissions should be submitted together with a completed Application Form downloaded from this webpage via the HKIE Transactions ScholarOne Manuscripts site

July 2023 Subject to referees' comments, authors may need to revise their papers for the reviewing process
August 2023 Announcement of results
  • The list of awarded paper(s) will be announced through the HKIE website;
    Awardee(s) will be notified individually
  • The awarded sole or first author will be invited to attend the Prize Presentation Ceremony
  • Arrangements will be made for the awarded sole or first author to speak at the Public Lecture which will be held in Hong Kong
  • Additional information including the CV, biography and photo of author(s), has to be submitted for publishing in HKIE Transactions (Award Issue)

Remarks

  1. Both HKIE members and non-HKIE members are welcome to submit papers to the captioned Award.
  2. In the event of extension of submission deadline, the age requirement based on the original closing date of submission remains unchanged.
  3. The application form should be completed, signed and submitted by the Sole or First Author.
  4. The Panel of Judges of the Award reserves all the right on the final decision including not to make any Award. The Panel's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
