Dear members

As we approach the year’s end, a period filled with significant events, our commitment to serving as the vital link connecting diverse stakeholders and resources remains steadfast. We have been actively engaged in both local and international initiatives, representing Hong Kong’s engineering community on various fronts.

We collaborated on the “3rd Cross-Strait, Hong Kong, and Macao Urban Construction and Sustainable Development Science and Technology Forum”, where our members participated in Science Forums and the Youth Roundtable Session. This forum facilitated valuable exchanges on sustainable transportation and urban construction, fostering global cooperation and creating fresh opportunities worldwide.

Last week, we further strengthened our international ties with a visit to the UK, where we hosted  a Cocktail Reception in partnership with the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) London. This event brought together entrepreneurs, practising engineers, and students from the UK’s vibrant engineering community.  We also engaged in fruitful discussions with sister institutions on potential collaborations, including hosting joint international conferences.

A notable highlight was our co-organisation of a professional International Conference with The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), where speakers from various professional bodies shared insights on engineering, innovation, and nurturing future leaders.  Discussions also touched on the broader theme of global sustainability, alongside the sustainability of the engineering profession itself.

Currently, Vice President Ir Prof Frank CHAN is leading the HKIE delegation at the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 29) in Azerbaijan. His presentation on Hong Kong’s climate-resilient infrastructure underscores our commitment to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). Next week, we will launch a publication showcasing Hong Kong engineers’ contributions across the 17 UNSDGs, illustrating the pivotal role of engineering in global prosperity and sustainability. This living document will be continuously updated with notable projects. We also invite you to participate in a Cover Design Competition, with selected designs possibly featured in future editions. Additionally, our Divisions are producing videos featuring how various engineering disciplines are advancing the UNSDGs.

On 11 November, we celebrated a significant milestone: 207 of our members became the first batch of Hong Kong engineering professionals to attain Mainland post titles through a new evaluation mechanism. This achievement marks an important expansion of our members’ professional presence in the Greater Bay Area.

In Hong Kong, many of our recommendations on innovation, new industrialisation, talent acquisition, land and housing supply, the low-altitude economy, and smart city development have been adopted by the Administration in the 2024 Policy Address.  These proposals aim to enhance livelihoods and shape the future of Hong Kong.

At the HKIE, I am delighted to announce the successful conclusion of our second stakeholder engagement workshop for governance review, a primary focus of this Session. I look forward to sharing key insights with you following our internal review of the consultant’s recommendations.

On a lighter note, we have begun preparations for our grand anniversary next year.  These include a logo design competition, the HKIE Grand 50th Annual Dinner, and the HKIE 50th Anniversary Legacy Award. Corporate Members are encouraged to nominate projects and initiatives from the past five decades that have made lasting impacts in the realms of Innovation, Industrial, and Infrastructure.

Lastly, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Past President Ir Prof P L YUEN, who has received Gold Medal—the highest honour from the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE)—in recognition of his exceptional service and contributions to building services engineering. Please join me in celebrating Ir Prof YUEN’s remarkable achievement, which is a source of pride for us all.

Ir Eric MA Siu-cheung
