(Third Message)

Dear members,

Walk with You – In Time of COVID-19

In times of difficulty, giving warmth and care to the vulnerable and disadvantaged groups is particularly important. On 17 April 2020, I arranged to distribute 100 vegetarian lunch boxes and 100 fortune bags (including 10 masks, hand sanitiser, comfort food and a greeting card) to the elderly in the community. Another 100 fortune bags were given to front-line cleaning workers who were encountered in everyday life up to the end of April 2020. I am pleased to share with you that active support to the needy would not only help them in times of need, it will also bring them hope and joy.

Songs fill us with positive energy to combat disease. I was invited by the Law Society of Hong Kong to represent the HKIE to cooperate with medical, legal, architectural and accountant professionals and singers to release a song named “疫境同行”. The Development Bureau (DEVB), Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) and Construction Industry Council (CIC) pic3also joined hands with professional institutions and associations in the construction industry to produce a music video entitled “抗疫同舟”. I was invited to participate in its production together with Mr Michael Wong, Secretary for Development, Ir Dr the Hon Lo Wai-kwok, Representative of the Engineering Functional Constituency of the Legislative Council, Ir Lam Sai-hung, Permanent Secretary for Development (Works), Ir Ricky Lau, Director of Civil Engineering and Development Department, Mr Chan Ka-kui, Chairman of CIC, Ir Albert Cheng, Executive Director of CIC, major stakeholders and other construction industry practitioners to show our solidarity in the fight against the epidemic. This inspirational video has been released and available at https://youtu.be/pPN9ZR4GNUQ

Following my appeal to members for donation to support the CIC’s Campaign to help those registered construction workers in Hong Kong in February, I am pleased to receive enthusiastic response from members and would like to thank all 584 of them, including 567 members from the DEVB and Works Departments, who have contributed to this meaningful cause either through the DEVB, the HKIE or to the CIC direct. In terms of the amount of donation, a total amount of HK$474,068 was received wherein HK$366,268 was from members in the DEVB and Works Departments and the remaining sum of HK$107,800 was from members making their donation to the HKIE or CIC direct. To fulfill my pledge to make a dollar-to-dollar matching for the donation received from HKIE members up to a maximum of HK$300,000, I am pleased to report that the sum has been forwarded to CIC. Adding all the donations from these members together, we have contributed over HK$770,000 to the CIC up to 5 May 2020.

Please continue to take all necessary precautionary measures to protect yourself and your families against the virus and hope the pandemic will soon be under control.
