Introduction

Professional engineers play an important role in occupational safety and health. A safe design and operation on engineering works not only prevent the chance of loss due to accidents but also increase the productivity. This in turn strengthens the competitiveness of the organisation. However, new risks may be introduced into the workplace due to changes in techniques, new plants and equipment, new materials or change of contractors. It is therefore necessary for engineers to assess the potential and hidden hazards associated with these changes. To enable the engineers fulfilling these duties, they need to possess knowledge in safety and health that are generally seldom included in formal curriculum during their engineering education. The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers recognises the demand and jointly organises related safety training courses with Occupational Safety and Health Council for all graduate engineers.
