The Hong Kong Velodrome with its distinctive roof floating above a town park serves not only elite sport but also the community at large. Located at the centre of an established high-rise community, consideration is given to the impact the building will have upon the local community. The roof profile and colour are carefully designed to breakdown the building massing and to minimize the visual impact to the surrounding environment.
The curvilinear shape helps to reduce the mass of the building from all vantage points and forms a strong relationship with the surrounding organically shaped town park. The elliptical form and distinctive ribbed roof is inspired by the profile of a bicycle helmet. The roof is designed to appear floating above the park which reduces the apparent bulk of the building. Convenient access is also allowed at concourse level around the entire perimeter.
The venue boasts a 250-metre indoor cycling track with supporting facilities that meets the highest international standards. Additional facilities were carefully planned around this and include a multi-purpose arena, fitness room, table-tennis room, dance room, children’s playroom together with restaurant and bicycle pro-shop.
The project also includes the integrated design of a surrounding new town park which features an artificial lake, landscaped terraces, central lawn, elderly corner, children’s play area, amphitheatre and skateboard park.
