Chairman's
Message

Materials engineering activities exist in many forms in Hong
Kong. Materials engineers work in various industries such as
building and construction, electronics manufacturing, and materials
and product testing. Researchers in Hong Kong's universities
and research and development institutions also conduct world-class
materials research. The Materials Division of the HKIE has been
working with industry and academics in promoting the technology
level of materials engineering.
As in previous sessions, the Division is fortunate to have
a capable, committed and enthusiastic committee in Session 2007/2008.
The Committee actively maintains and promotes the culture of
divisional activities such as local and international technical
visits, seminars and conferences. Such activities have been
carefully monitored to meet the Continuing Professional Development
standard.
Under the leadership of our Immediate Past Chairman, Ir Dr
John Chan, the groundwork on providing top-up courses for members
of other disciplines of the HKIE as well as for applicants with
non-recognised academic qualifications to become members of
the Materials Discipline was laid out. It is our target to obtain
the approval of this scheme in this Session. This is an example
of our endeavor in promoting and extending the membership of
the Division.
Our effort on deep collaboration with other divisions in organising
joint events will continue. Further collaboration with industries
and academic institutions will be sought. We shall form close
ties with other engineering institutions, e.g. the Institute
of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) in organising functions
such as the Best Paper Award for students working on materials.
The winner of the Award will then be sponsored to take part
in an overseas competition for an international award.
It is encouraging that the activities organised by the Division
has been well attended. The Committee welcomes your continuous
support and participation of these events, and would be grateful
to receive your comments for further improvement.
Ir Prof Lawrence WU
Chairman, Materials Division
Session 2007/2008
