It is my honour to be elected as the Chairman
of the Building Services (BS) Division for Session 2007/2008.
With the excellent leadership of past chairmen, the Division has
become one of the largest Divisions within the HKIE in terms of
membership with around 5,000 members. It is a busy, dynamic and
energetic Division playing important roles within and outside
the HKIE. As the new Chairman of the Division, I will try my best
to continue my predecessors' legacy for the benefit of the members.
Subsequent to the commencement of the new year-term,
representatives from the Division had attended the Zhejiang-HK
Joint Symposium 2007 in Hangzhou on 5-6 July 2007. The China symposium
is an annual event co-organised by the Division with our brother
institutions - ASHRAE and CIBSE. We celebrated the 10th anniversary
and there was a big delegation with over 50 engineers from Hong
Kong. I was honoured to deliver a closing speech on behalf of
the Division. Members who wish to join the next China Symposium
held in Zhengzhou (¾G¦{) and Henan (ªe«n) should pay attention to
our notice in due course. I certainly advocate for your participation
as this event would be a wonderful occasion for you to exchange
technical knowledge and experience with engineers on the Mainland.
Recently, members should have received notice
that the Division together with the Building Services Discipline
Advisory Panel would implement a Research Study on Hong Kong's
Building Services Profession. The aim is to study how status of
building services professionals could be raised and gain wider
recognition in society. The 14th of August 2007 was a crucial
milestone date of the study when the Division signed a Collaborative
Agreement with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University at the Headquarters.
It was a big triumph for the working group and I would like to
thank all who has contributed to the incubation and inception
of this meaningful research study. There will still be a long
and rugged road to achieve our target and I appeal for the continuous
support from all the members and fight for what we are deserved
together.
The new Committee consists of a team of enthusiastic,
devoted and experienced members. I would like to take this opportunity
to brief members on our work plan and some of the main tasks that
the Committee will be focusing on. They are briefly listed as
follows:
| 1. |
Building Services Profession Research Study - we shall assist
the working group for smooth completion of the study and prepare
for implementation of any recommendation from the research
team. |
| |
|
| 2. |
CPD Activities - the Committee will continue to organise
large varieties of CPD activities including technical talks,
seminars, symposiums, short courses and technical visits etc
in order to provide ample opportunities for members to develop
their professional knowledge and be kept updated with new
technology. |
| |
|
| 3. |
Best practice in Building Services - we shall explore the
feasibility of publishing the best engineering practice in
Building Services with an aim to raise the engineering standard
in the industry. |
| |
|
| 4. |
Student Liaison Group - subsequent to the completion of
the video clips about the BS profession, the group will pay
visits to secondary schools and introduce BS Engineering to
students. |
| |
|
| 5. |
Face lift of web site - The division Web site (http://www.hkiebsd.org)
is a good communication channel with our members. It will
soon be face lifted with more attractive interface and provide
more information. Database capability will be added to provide
easy online registration of our activities to members. |
| |
|
| 6. |
Social event - the Committee will organise some social events
so that members can have more opportunities to meet and make
friends with each other. Let's lay down the bothersome office
chores and enjoy ourselves in these pleasurable events. |
With the above plans, we will definitely have
an exciting Year ahead. However, these could be even better with
your kind support and suggestion. Please feel free to contact
us and express your views or comments on relevant issues.
