| Young Engineer of the Year Award 2008 - Ir Dr Albert Ko Wing-yin |
In line with the overwhelming response of the Young Engineer of the Year Award in previous years, the HKIE is pleased to organise the Young Engineer of the Year Award 2008. It was glad that all candidates have had significant contributions and outstanding achievements to the profession, to the community of Hong Kong and to the HKIE. The selection process has been competitive, hence the decision on the selection has never been easy for the Panel of Judges. This year, the Award goes to Ir Dr Albert W Y Ko.
Ir Dr Albert Ko is a mechanical engineer specialised in artificial intelligence and applied robotics. Striving for professional development, he has been working as an engineer in Chinese Taipei, Japan, Hong Kong and China before returning to college to pursue his MPhil and PhD studies at the University of Hong Kong in 2001. Throughout his career, he has traveled to over 100 cities in 22 countries.
Ir Dr Ko is an experienced humanitarian relief worker and has devoted his time to community services. He was the first Hong Kong engineer recruited by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) and he has served as a board member/engineering advisor. He has participated in different missions around the world, for instance, to assist the emergency interventions in Indonesia during 2004 Tsunami, and in Pakistan during the 2005 Kashmir earthquake. Currently, Ir Dr Ko is a mentor of the HKU Space Mentorship Programme, an advisor of NanHai Volunteer Association in China, and the initiator of an emergency engineering course with the HKIE. His continuous contribution to the society has earned him the "Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award" in 2007.
Ir Dr Ko believes the joy of robotics studies should not be a sole privilege for those who mastered difficult mathematics and science concepts. Instead, robotics should be recognised as a tool for generating students' interest in these difficult subjects. Following this believe, Ir Dr Ko and his fellow researchers established FIRST Laboratory (Free Instructional Robotics Science & Technology Laboratory), a small-scale volunteer-based non-profit organisation that offers 100% free robotics courses to school teachers and students which aims to nurture creative and scientific young minds to facilitate the society's ongoing needs for innovative leaders.
This year, three young members Ir Vincent T H Chu, Ir Johnson K C Lee and Ir Fanny P Y Ting were also presented the Certificate of Merit.
