What is the definition of volunteer services under the HKIE Professional Volunteers Service Accreditation Programme? |

The volunteer services under the Programme are defined as work without remuneration and financial/material benefits. Volunteers shall not have personal relationship with the beneficiaries, who are, under normal circumstances, in need of help.
"Volunteer Services" may include :
- services for the Institution;
- engagement in the advancement of the knowledge, skill or public awareness of the profession with which the volunteer is associated;
- academic pursuits or work relating to transferring knowledge or skill of the profession with which the volunteer is associated, in an educational or training setting;
- knowledge transfer among different profession of which the volunteer is qualified;
- volunteer services applying knowledge and skill of the profession of which the volunteer is qualified; or
- volunteer services not necessarily applying knowledge or skill of the profession of which the volunteer is qualified.

Will political or religious activities be accredited as volunteer services? |
|
Political or religious activities will not be accredited. However, the nature of the volunteer services is the crux. If the volunteer services are not intended to indoctrinate benefits to organisers or engage volunteers in political or religious movements, the political or religious background of the organisers is immaterial.

Will professional services such as participating in HKIE boards/committees and organising learned society activities be accredited as volunteer services? |
|
Yes, they will be accredited.

Can volunteers accept souvenirs? |
|
Souvenirs of insignificant commercial value are acceptable.

As stated in the Volunteer Services Record Form, documentary evidence must be available for checking upon request by the Selection Committee. What happens if no documentary proof is provided? |

It is always desirable to have documentary evidence available for checking. In case there is no certificate issued, any form of written record will serve the purpose.

Will sports competitions be accredited as volunteer services? |
|
No unless the competition aims to raise fund for charitable organisations, or it is intended to provide amusement to people who are in need of help.

Will the golf tournament organised by the HKIE be accredited as volunteer service? |
|
No. It is because the HKIE members and their families who enjoy the amusement of the tournament are not in need of help.

Will singing, dancing or other forms of performances to the elderly be accredited as volunteer services? |
|
Activities or performances for charitable purposes will be accredited.

Will the services rendered for election campaigns be considered as voluntary services? |
|
No. It is because the beneficiaries are the candidates standing for election.

Will staging a protest or demonstration be taken as volunteer service? |
|
No. Protest or demonstration is regarded as political activity rather than volunteer service.

What happens if the volunteer activities are not that successful and receive poor responses? |
|
Despite the poor responses, the hours spent on organising the activities will be accredited. Nevertheless, if the activities are completely called off, the hours contributed will not be counted and accredited.

Will the hours of volunteer services undertaken on the Mainland be accredited? |
|
Yes. The number of hours of volunteer services will be accredited.

Will the time spent on transportation be accredited? |
|
Yes. The transportation time will be accredited.

Who is eligible for taking part in the HKIE Professional Volunteers Service Accreditation Programme? |
|
All HKIE members, irrespective of membership grade, are welcome to take part in the Programme.
