to recognise the academic achievements of the outstanding full-time engineering undergraduate students;
to identify potential engineering students and develop them into future engineers;
to promote the HKIE to engineering students in local universities; and
to encourage our future engineers to take active participation in the HKIE activities.
Awards
The Scholarship will be awarded to three engineering undergraduate students. Each successful candidate will receive a certificate and a total grant of HK$60,000 throughout the three academic years, which will be disbursed to the recipients in three installments (i.e. HK$20,000 per annum) at the end of each academic year. However, the 2nd and the 3rd installments will only be disbursed to the awardees if their academic results are either of i) 3.5 GPA or above; ii) 10.33 SGA or above; or iii) the top 5% in their classes.
Eligibility
Candidate should:
be a permanent resident of Hong Kong;
be a full-time Year One student in any engineering degree course accredited by the HKIE in any local university;
have selected an engineering degree programme accredited by the HKIE as his/her Band A choice in the application to the university;
obtain Grade C or above in AS Use of English and AS Chinese Language and Culture and Grade B or above in two science subjects in the Hong Kong Advance Level of Examination (HKALE) or equivalent;
aspire to be a practising engineer after graduation;
be a student member of the HKIE with active participation in the HKIE activities or in the process of application for student membership;
have strong leadership ability demonstrated in his/her extra-curricular activities and community service; and
be recommended by the Dean of Engineering Faculty or the Head of Engineering Department of the University.
Application Procedures
Universities offering engineering courses accredited by the HKIE will be informed of the Scholarship scheme and be invited to make nominations for the Scholarship.
Nominations should only be made by the Dean of Engineering Faculty/School or the Head of Engineering Department. Each University can nominate a maximum of three candidates of different engineering courses accredited by the HKIE.
The nominations must be submitted together with
a statement, written by the candidate, on the topic "Challenges and Opportunities for Engineers in the New Generation";
a statement of recommendation by the Dean of the Engineering Faculty or the Head of Engineering Department who is in support of the nomination;
copy/ies of the candidate's academic results at the University;
copy/ies of the candidate's HKALE and HKCEE results; and
copy/ies of other documentary proof.
Nominations must be completed and returned to the HKIE on or before 31 March 2010.
Selection Procedures
The Judging Panel consists of senior members of the HKIE.
The selection criteria will be based on
Academic results at the University;
HKALE results in the Use of English, Chinese Language and Culture and other science subjects;
Enthusiasm in becoming a practising engineer;
Leadership ability demonstrated in his/her extra-curricular activities and community service; and
Performance at the interview.
The awardees must demonstrate their enthusiasm in becoming a practising engineer in contributing to the health and safety of the community of Hong Kong.
Candidates will be short-listed and invited for an interview in May/June 2010. Candidates not invited for interview by July 2010 shall consider that their applications not successful.
The HKIE reserves the right to reject or disqualify any application. The decision of the HKIE Judging Panel will be final. In the event of their being unable to find candidates of sufficient merit, they may withhold all or any of the awards at their absolute discretion.
Announcement of the Results
The universities and the individual awardees will be notified of the results in September 2010.
Presentation of Awards
