to identify and recognise those potential engineering students with excellent scholastic achievements;
to encourage them to select engineering undergraduate programmes as their principal choice of study; and
to promote the HKIE and engineering profession to local secondary school students.
Number of Awards
The Prize will be awarded to a maximum of 10 full-time Secondary 6 Science Stream students.
Value of Awards
Each award includes a cash prize of HK$2,000 and a certificate.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidate should:
be a permanent resident of Hong Kong;
be a full-time Secondary 6 student in the Science Stream in any local secondary school;
obtain Grade B or above in both English and Chinese Language in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) or equivalent; and
obtain Grade A in at least 3 science subjects in the HKCEE or equivalent (Science subjects include Additional Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Studies, Mathematics and Physics);
have strong leadership abilities demonstrated in his/her extra-curricular activities and community service;
intend to pursue engineering undergraduate programmes as their principal choice of study, and shall apply for an engineering undergraduate programme accredited by the HKIE in a local university as one of their Band A choices through the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS); and
be recommended by his/her school principal.
Application Procedures
School principals will be invited to nominate their students for the Prize.
Each school principal can nominate a maximum of five students for the Prize.
Nominations must be submitted together with
a statement, written by the candidate, on the topic "The Greatest Engineering Project in Hong Kong" or "The Greatest Invention in the 20th Century and it's Inspiration to me";
a statement of recommendation by the candidate's school principal in support of the nomination;
a copy of the candidate's HKCEE results; and
copies of other documentary proof.
Nominations must be returned to the HKIE on or before 31 March 2010.
Selection Procedures
The Judging Panel consists of senior members of the HKIE.
The selection criteria will be based on
HKCEE results in the subjects of English and Chinese Language and other science subjects;
Interest and commitment to pursue study in engineering;
Leadership ability demonstrated in his/her extra-curricular activities and community services; and
Performance at the interview.
The awardees must demonstrate their enthusiasm in studying engineering undergraduate programmes in one of the local universities.
Candidates will be short-listed and invited for an interview in May/June 2010. Candidates not invited for interview by July 2010 shall consider their applications not successful.
The HKIE reserves the right to reject or disqualify any application. The decision of the HKIE Judging Panel will be final. In the event of their being unable to find candidates of sufficient merit, they may withhold all or any of the awards at their absolute discretion.
Offers
The Prize is offered on the understanding that successful candidates would pursue engineering undergraduate programmes as their principal choice of study. Due confirmation from candidates would be required and entries of JUPAS Band A programmes suffice for this purpose. Notification of the results of the Prize will be made in September/October 2010.
Presentation of Awards
The Prize will be given to awardees at the Prize Presentation Ceremony.
