Project Description: The territory's first commercial-scale wind power station developed by Hongkong Electric, not only turned a new chapter in Hong Kong's electricity supply history, but also allowed the local community to enjoy for the first time the supply of electricity generated by wind power - one of the many sources of renewable energy available now. The main objectives of this project are to acquire knowledge in the design, construction and operation of wind turbine and promote public awareness of the benefits as well as the limitations of utilising wind as renewable energy for power generation in the context of Hong Kong's unique situations.

The Lamma wind turbine is Nordex's standard N50/800kW machine with a rotor diameter of 50 metres and a rated power of 800kW. The wind turbine is of stall-regulated, "horizontal axis" design and is mounted up-wind. The project as a whole was engineered and managed by HEC's in house project team. Educational exhibits on nature and application of various form of renewable energy are displayed within the wind turbine project site. The project site was named "Lamma Winds" at the opening ceremony held on 23 February 2006. Lamma Winds is expected to produce about one million kWh of "green" electricity per year adequate for the consumption of 250 families in Hong Kong.
