Ir Hsu started his career in Singapore and moved on to the United States before joining Johnson Controls for over 25 years with responsibility for developing the company's growth strategy in Asia. A thirty-fold sales increase was achieved during this period. He retired from Johnson Controls as Vice President and Managing Director of its Asia Pacific operations. Young Engineer of the Year Award 2010 In line with the overwhelming response of the Young Engineer of the Year Award in previous years, the HKIE is pleased to organise the Young Engineer of the Year Award 2010. It was glad that all candidates have had significant contributions and outstanding achievements to the profession, to the community of Hong Kong and to the HKIE. The selection process has been competitive, hence the decision on the selection has never been easy for the Panel of Judges. This year, the Award goes to Ir Mandy M Y Leung. Ir Mandy Leung is an electrical engineer specialising in transmission network planning. Having obtained her Bachelor and Master's degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Hong Kong, Ir Leung joined Swire Properties as a management trainee. She then joined CLP Power Hong Kong Limited in 2001 and started her career in the power industry. As a grid planning engineer responsible for the planning and design of the grid transmission network in major areas of Hong Kong, Ir Leung is making an important contribution to the future development of this city. As a strategic planner providing support for the corporate development group, Ir Leung was also involved in managing regulatory issues with Government bureaus. In 2009, Ir Leung pursued an MBA degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong to enrich her management knowledge. Her academic background and working experience in strategic management and transmission network planning have provided her with a great foundation for development into an all-round engineer. Ir Leung is actively involved in the promotion of the engineering profession. She has served the Young Members Committee of the HKIE since 2003. With a view towards uplifting the status of engineers in Hong Kong and broadening their overseas exposure, Ir Leung organised various continuing professional development programmes and overseas delegations to Dubai and Denmark. Ir Leung devotes herself to serving the community and nurturing the younger generation through education. She has served as a part-time English tutor for children of new immigrants at the Portuguese Community School and is also a mentor of the Path Builders Mentorship Programme, which was set up to help secondary school students suffering from drug abuse make an early recovery. This year, three young members, Ir Clement K M Fung, Ir TSE Lok Him and Ir Dr Kelvin W K Yeung were also presented the Certificate of Merit. The HKIE Innovation Awards for Young Members 2010 With an aim to encourage our young members to develop their creativity through innovative application of engineering knowledge, and to inspire upon them to develop their intellectual and career interests in engineering, the Institution is pleased to launch the HKIE Innovation Awards for Young Members 2009, a new initiative with the generous support of the family of the late Ir Kenneth Au-yeung. The entry can focus on any areas of engineering disciplines within the context of the HKIE. There are two main categories, namely Category I - An Invention and Category II - An Innovative Application of Engineering Theories. The innovativeness of the Design will be assessed based on its originality and creativity. This year, the two Grand Prizes go to Dr Kelvin T W Ng (Category I) and Ir Leung Kwok Kin (Category II). Waste-derived Alternative Daily Cover by Dr Kelvin T W Ng Dr Kelvin Ng's award-winning entry demonstrates an original and innovative reuse of waste in civil engineering projects. Regulatory agencies around the world require the use of daily covers for waste deposited at landfills. For a typical landfill, the total space lost due to the placement of daily covers alone can be as high as 25%. Full utilisation of landfill space is only possible with the use of waste-derived daily covers. Moreover, reusing waste materials also goes well with the aim of sustainable solid waste management. A synthetic paste of waste tire chips and paper sludge was developed as an alternative daily cover with the goal of extending the life of the remaining landfills. Laboratory results suggested that the use of the proposed paste effectively reduced the risk of fines migration and clogging of the leachate collection pipes, enhanced the stability and degree of homogeneity of the buried waste and improved leachate quality by retaining some of the metal and organic pollutants. Dr Ng is currently Assistant Professor of Environmental Systems Engineering at the University of Regina, Canada. He received his doctoral degree from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2008 and his major field of interest is environmental geotechnics, particularly in solid waste disposal facility design. Submarine Treasure by Ir Leung Kwok Kin The award-winning project, "Submarine Treasure", is used for repairing submarine cables damaged by seawater ingress. By integrating five key features into a traditional submarine cable joint, Ir Leung Kwok-kin succeeded in developing an innovative device, the "Submarine Treasure", which provides a practical solution to problems that have long plagued the submarine cable industry, including the issue of seawater ingress in damaged submarine cables. "Submarine Treasure" has brought both tangible and intangible benefits to the industry, the community and the environment. It helps to save cost and improve supply reliability, thereby enhancing the operator's corporate image as well as safety and quality performance. Ir Leung Kwok-kin graduated from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University with a First Class Honours degree in Electrical Engineering and an MSc in Building Services Engineering. Subsequently he also attained an MBA (Distinction) from City University of Hong Kong. Ir Leung joined CLP Power Hong Kong Limited upon his graduation in 1996 and led the cable team of the Asset Management Department with responsibility for managing technical evaluation, power cable design and the development of new technologies for the company. He is now Project Manager - Knowledge Management - of the same department. Since 2003, his team has received over 14 internal and external champion awards in Hong Kong and other cities. One patent has been granted for his innovative work. This year, Certificates of Merit of Category II were also presented to Ir Anita Siu, Mr Yang Heng, Miss Gao Yi and Mr Evan Aditya Susanto.
